Apology ¡®meant for entire RP¡¯

President Arroyo apologized to the entire nation, not to Susan Roces alone, for her ¡°lapse of judgment¡± in talking with an election official during last year¡¯s voting, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Wednesday.

¡°The President addressed her apology to the whole nation and we believe that a majority have forgiven her,¡± Bunye said.

He said he understands Roces¡¯s getting emotional during her speech at Club Filipino in San Juan, because the Supreme Court had dismissed her husband¡¯s election protest.

¡°We feel her frustration but we maintain that the President won fairly. Even the local and international observers would agree that the election is credible,¡± Bunye said.

The President¡¯s political adviser, Gabriel Claudio, disagreed with Roces¡¯s accusation that the President stole the presidency.

¡°The tapes [of the President¡¯s conversations with the election official] are not proof that she committed fraud or cheated in the elections,¡± Claudio said.

He said Roces did not indicate her choice should the President be replaced.

¡°It¡¯s easy to demand and shout and demand the resignation of the sitting president, but what kind of alternatives are being offered or outlined? This is where the danger lies. The nation faces so many challenges. You do not just ask a sitting president to step down without offering any alternative,¡± Claudio said.

Opposition senators on Wed¡©nesday praised Roces for her courage in expressing what they said were the people¡¯s outrage over the poll fraud allegedly committed by the President.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile said Roces has emerged as the ¡°strongest moral force for all opposition forces to unite in challenging President Arroyo¡¯s right to govern.¡±

¡°Mrs. Poe¡¯s moral leadership will likely galvanize all forces toward a common direction and objective,¡± Enrile said.

He supported Roces¡¯s call for the people to voice out their indignation against Mrs. Arroyo.

The Senate minority leader, Aquilino Pimentel Jr., said Roces¡¯s strongly worded statement would aggravate matters for the President.

¡°That was a devastating message to the President. It makes things more complicated for her,¡± he said.

Pimentel thinks Roces will support whoever will lead street protests, but he doubts that she will take the forefront in replacing Mrs. Arroyo.

¡°If it will take people power to do this, she will lend her support to whoever leads it. But I don¡¯t think she wants to run for president. We should respect her stand,¡± Pimentel said.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada doesn¡¯t believe Roces meant to incite people to revolt against the President.

¡°She just wants to know the truth. It is very clear that her husband was cheated. I agree with her that Mrs. Arroyo stole the presidency twice. First, from my father and second from Fernando Poe,¡± Estrada said.

Senate President Franklin Drilon appealed for sobriety and urged the followers of Poe to abide by the law.

¡°I can understand the frustration of the opposition, but everyone is duty bound to make sure that the process established by the Constitution will work or else we will have anarchy,¡± Drilon said.

Sen. Rodolfo Biazon said Mrs. Arroyo should be bothered by Roces¡¯s participation in the opposition-led political event.

¡°The President should not disregard the moves of Roces and in fact, they should be inputted into what actions the administration may have to take. Roces¡¯s moves cannot be ignored,¡± Biazon said.

Rep. Imee Marcos said the people who felt cheated in the last presidential election have found a leader in Roces. Marcos expects protest actions in the coming days to meet Roces¡¯s demand for the President to resign. To prevent chaos from gripping the country, Marcos said it is best that Mrs. Arroyo willfully and formally resign.

Rep. Liza Maza of Gabriela said Roces¡¯s move is a ¡°welcome development¡± and admired her courage and determination ¡°to carry on the battle for truth and justice.¡±

¡°Roces has chosen to listen to and stand by the people. This is in stark contrast to President Arroyo¡¯s stubborn posture to hold on to power, despite snowballing calls for her resignation,¡± Maza said.
