N Korea vote turnout '100 percent'
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) --North Korean voters who backed their leaders 100 percent in a parliamentary election displayed an "unshakable desire" to build a powerful socialist nation under Kim Jong Il, an official report said Monday.
North Koreans on Sunday elected Kim and hundreds of others to the communist country's rubber-stamp parliament with total support, according KCNA, the North's official news agency.
A North Korean election committee reported near 100 percent voter turnout, with all of the votes going to one candidate who ran alone in each district, it said.
"This is an expression of all the voters' support and trust in the DPRK government and a manifestation of our army and people's steadfast will to consolidate the people's power as firm as a rock and accomplish the revolutionary cause," KCNA quoted a report by the election committee.
DPRK stands for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The elections for the assembly are a formality because candidates are hand-picked by the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and totalitarian leader Kim.
The voters "displayed once again the unshakable desire and will to build a great prosperous powerful socialist nation in this land," under Kim, the report said.
The elections selected 687 deputies to the 11th Supreme People's Assembly for a five-year term.
The parliament has the authority to write laws, elect the Cabinet and approve and settle the government's budget.
